Abstract
My aim was to examine and compare the possible 5 different preparation methods for spectrometry measurements. Therethrough, to find the most suitable method to replace the EMCO milling machine in case of malfunction, which allows getting the most reliable result on the spectrometer, First, I introduce the history of ISD DUNAFERR Zrt. and DUNAFERR LABOR Nonprofit Ltd., then I present the theoretical background of my measurements. Finally, the research ended with great results. Besides the spectrometry measurements, I added surface roughness measurement and metallography test to get a more detailed and accurate picture of the differences concerning the preparation methods. As the experiment progressed, two types of replacement sequences appeared to be outlined between the devices. One was based on the the aspects of surface values and another on spectrometry studies. There was an unexpected deviation between the two orders, but since the reproducibility of the spectrometer measurements was in primary consideration, determining the final order was based on that. Regarding the results of the measurement and the experience gained during the research, my suggestion for the order is the following: 1. Fine-grained sandpaper 2. HERZOG milling machine 3. Coarse-grained sandpaper I consider black sandpaper is unnecessary, since we must apply coarse-grained paper before using it (that leads to better results), so there is no need to waste extra time and material. Based on the results of surface grinding (HK 150 and ATHENA), I do not recommend applying them for the preparation of steel samples, otherwise further preparation operation is needed. I hope that with the new experiences and results gained during my study, I can support the more efficient work of our laboratory.
