Abstract
In my thesis, I demonstrated how to build the foundations of the Environmental Management System according to ISO 14001 through the activities of a metal machining production plant. The organization of the company has been introduced and after that the main steps of the production technology has been explained, how the axle and the iron wheel - that arrive at the factory - are finally welded and machined into a perfectly balanced product. I have focused on the impact matrix mainly as a key element of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. I have identified the environmental aspects, starting with the Company's energy consumption. Then - started from outside - the potential sources of soil contamination have been identified, the generated municipal and industrial wastewater, and the groundwater and surface water loads has been examined. For air pollution, I’ve examined the Company's stationary emission points and the ozone pollutants used. I’ve identified the wastes generated by the Company's activities and then examined the Company's environmental noise impact. To identify environmental aspects and assess impacts, it is also crucial to understand the Company's context. After defining the relevant legal environment, the needs and expectations of interested parties have been also presented. During the preparation of impact matrix, I’ve described the methodology of it and then took a life cycle approach to analyze and assess the all the impacts from the point of purchase of the raw material until the end of the product life cycle, when the previously produced part becomes waste. The impact matrix has input data and output information also. In my thesis, I have tried to show how the matrix can be used to set key performance indicators. The analysis also highlights the emergency situations that the organization needs to prepare for. One of the main objectives of the implementation of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is the PDCA principle and the continuous improvement and development that it is intended to achieve. I have made suggestion for decreasing environmental impact at the end of my dissertation.
