Abstract

In my thesis, I deal with the operation of heat exchangers and their proper application in practice. My main focus is their efficiency, as this is more important than anything else in a cost and time oriented industrial world. Furthermore, I am going to present the various problems reducing efficiency and possible design errors. Also, I am going to briefly describe the operation of heat exchangers, list and compare a few types of them and elaborate their applications, advantages and disadvantages. My aim is to optimize and fine-tune the performance of heat exchangers, with my own calculations providing a backing. In order to perform the appropriate calculations, I am going to use the measurements and data provided by the field station where I have an internship. To put the engineering background into practice, I will propose alternative solutions to avoid under-designed heat exchangers or maintenance problems which are considered cost inefficient. Specifically, I am analysing the performance of the plate heat exchanger used in the Paks Medical Centre – Spa facility. I have successfully identified and calculated the issues and the deviation from the design values. On this basis, I am going to conclude a maintenance recommendation, as the heat exchanger is properly sized but it’s efficiency has deteriorated over time.
